2015 was our most exciting year yet. The past 12 months moved along at a thundering pace but there were still plenty of wonderful opportunities to see new places and meet many creative and inspiring individuals.
We were honored to be part of an exhibition of Northwest design at Bellevue Art Museum in the summer called the New Frontier.
Darin joined Studio Gorm, Ladies & Gentlemen, Jonah Takagi, and Christopher Speece in September at the Hancock Shaker Village in rural Massachusetts. They met there to study Shaker objects and lifestyle for a project to be released in Spring 2016.
Fall saw the completion a design/build project for Nike World Headquarters and involved working with skilled designers and builders.
Our trip to Mexico City in late October for Design Week Mexico may have been the highlight of the year.
The city is thriving with a youthful and contemporary vibrance that coincides with endless layers of history still visible in the streets, above and below (such as the excavation of Aztec Pyramids in the main Zocalo).
We were welcomed with generous hospitality by the talented and energetic hosts of Design Week and given an introduction to how culturally rich and fascinating the city can be. The design pavilion showcased the high level of workmanship that Mexico is known for paired with the latest in contemporary design.
We stayed in the La Condessa neighborhood which lies Southwest of the city center. It has a mix of small cafes, bars, and retail. Highly recommend the area.
We toured houses by the beloved architect Luis Barragan, enjoyed a traditional lunch in a beautiful garden that had be seen to be believed. We visited studios of local designers including La Metropolitania and Lagos del Mundo.
2016 already promises to be another exciting year with many events already in development.
We start by heading back to Toronto this week for the Toronto Offsite Design Festival 2016.
